| | | | | | | | | Update: River to Sea Loop Construction | | |
| | | We've noticed quite a few conversations on our Facebook page about the current road construction along A1A. We have received information from FDOT's Community Outreach representative and have a few updates about the work. The contractor has implemented closures requiring detours on Ocean Shore Boulevard to accommodate drainage improvements, curb and gutter installation, and pedestrian enhancement operations in the southbound lanes. These detours have been split into 3 segments. The first segment, between Neptune Avenue and East Granada Boulevard, has been completed. The second segment, between Amsden Road and Neptune Boulevard, is wrapping up. The last segment, between Standish Drive and Amsden Road, is expected to be implemented on Monday, July 14 and remain closed for approximately three months, pending weather and unforeseen circumstances.
Detour information and maps for all three segments are posted on the project page here: https://www.cflroads.com/project/442874-1
We appreciate the community's cooperation and patience as construction continues. Please let FDOT's District 5 Community Outreach Specialist, Debbie Cople, know if you have any questions or concerns: Debbie.Cople@dot.state.fl.us | | |

| | We are looking for a few key people who would like to be a part of our core volunteers. During the past two years, our organization has revitalized, focusing primarily on environmental concerns, community outreach, educational enrichment and keeping the Byway clean. Our CleanUp Crew was formed in September, 2024 and our Environmental Committee was formed in June, 2024. There are a few opportunities to be a part of this great team. If you are interested or have questions, WE NEED YOU! Please call Nancy Galdo, 305-467-4412. Thank you!

Coontie, a cycad (ancient, seed-bearing plants that are often referred to as "living fossils," dating back to the age of the dinosaurs) is a native plant that grows well throughout Florida. Often called Coontie ferns, these versatile plants are the only cycad native to the United States and are cold hardy, drought tolerant and can be grown in sun or shade. They look great as a single specimen or can be grouped in mass plantings for a hedge-like appearance. Coonties are also evergreen and require no trimming or pruning, another low maintenance plus. In addition, rather than flowers, coonties produce orange/red seed cones that provide visual interest. But perhaps one of its most important attributes - especially to those looking to attract pollinators to their yards - is that coonties are the host plant for the South Florida Atala butterfly. When you add up all of these wonderful characteristics, it's easy to see why coonties are worthy of being considered in your local landscape...consider planting at least one in your yard sometime soon!
