The Friends of Tomoka Basin State Park, the Pawpaw Native Plant Society and our own Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail National Scenic Byway, will join together to redesign and maintain a Native Plant Garden in Tomoka State Park in early 2024. Located within the Park near the Tomoka Outpost, the garden has unfortunately been neglected over time. It is in rough shape but collectively, the three volunteer groups have committed to replanting the garden in the hopes of educating and inspiring local gardeners to plant native plants. Recently, organization members met with Tomoka Park Service Specialist David L. Jones to assess the native plants currently growing in the garden and to hear about his vision for the area. After touring the trails and documenting what natives are naturally found in the Park, organizers agreed to compile a list of plants that they will either purchase or donate to plant in the garden. Volunteer gardeners will be needed to help us maintain the garden once it is planted, so we'll keep you posted on our progress and the date of the initial planting. Meanwhile, if you are interested in participating and gardening with us, please contact Nancy Galdo at nancygaldo@gmail.com. If you are snowbirds living close by (maybe in condos) and would like to garden with us, this opportunity is for you! |
