Summer is Here and We're Chillin'

Whew, it's hot outside! During these hot and humid days, most Floridians take to the beach or air conditioning and limit their activities to early morning or late afternoons. We're no different; so as we move through the hot summer months, we're focusing on events that keep us cool and promote collaborations with other organizations in our area.

Celebrate Christmas in July!

The Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail is excited to be participating in this year's "Christmas in July" event on July 27th! Sponsored by the Ormond Main Street Association, this exciting community event is designed to support Ormond Beach's vibrant local businesses. Visitors can explore the Ormond Main Street downtown district and keep an eye out for Mr. and Ms. Claus as they visit shops and spread holiday cheer! We'll be a vendor at the Ormond Beach Historical Society's Anderson Price Building and will have plenty of info and special merchandise on hand for your July Christmas shopping!

Turtle Patrol Excavates

Leatherback Nest

For those of us who live along the Loop, sightings of wildlife are always a highlight of our days. The fact that we live so closely with wild, often threatened species fills us with both awe and a sense of responsiblity. Recently, a rare, leatherback turtle nest was monitored in the north peninsula area of the Loop. Residents who live near Ormond Shores Estates gathered to watch the excavation of their adopted leatherback nest. Volunteers from the Volusia Turtle Patrol quickly found the eggs and discovered that most of them had hatched successfully. This was the first hatched nest of the 2024 turtle season and we hope it bodes well for the future of these very special ocean turtles. We are so appreciative of the dedicated volunteers of the Turtle Patrol who travel our beaches regularly, tape-off recently laid turtle nests and then monitor their progress. What a special area we live in!

Egg-citement!

Volunteers excavate the nest and keep track of the number of eggs they find. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) requires that the eggs in the nest be counted within 3 days after hatching. They keep meticulous records and our local Turtle Patrol coordinates closely with them to ensure that we are doing all we can to protect these endangered animals.

Saturday, September 21st

The Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail is enthusiastic to once again be partnering with Volusia County as it participates in the Ocean Conservancy's 39th International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) on September 21st. This is a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in our community and we'll be seeking volunteers to help us clean up in our designated area of High Bridge. Keep an eye out for more info in our next newsletter and on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

The Mission of the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail Byway organization is to protect and enhance the Loop by serving as a focused source of education, community outreach and enhancements projects consistent with our volunteer resources and guidelines of the Florida Scenic Highway and National Scenic Byway programs.
