| | City of Ormond Beach Goes Native* |

In a move that's good for both the ReGrow the Loop Initiative and our local environment, the City of Ormond Beach has updated its code to require that native plants are included in the landscaping for new developments. The City Commission recently unanimously approved an amendment to its Land Development Code (LDC) which will require that native plants make up at least 50% of a development's landscaping. It's a policy direction officially set in motion last June, but one that local environmentalists have been advocating for several years. According to City Commissioner Lori Tolland, she initially proposed that the City's LDC require landscaping standards of 75% native plants prior to her election last year. Once on the Commission, she joined with local residents and says much of the credit for the update goes to engaged, environmental advocates such as Melissa Lammers, of the Halifax River Audubon; Leslie Nixon, of the Pawpaw Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society; Suzanne Scheiber, of Dream Green Volusia; and concerned citizens Alan Burton, Pam Novy, Sang Roberson and Ken and Julie Sipes. "I think Ormond Beach can now be a leader to all the other cities in Volusia County because we are stronger with our LDC for resiliency and in using native plants," added Toland. Audubon's Melissa Lammers said the LDC amendment is a "huge step in the right direction." Using native plants in landscaping can be very helpful, particularly as people grow increasingly concerned over development and the loss of habitat for local wildlife. Audubon recommends at least 70% of plantings be native to create a hospitable habitat, but Lammers said she understands that may not be achievable right away. "We really are thankful to Commissioner Tolland for championing this effort and to the City of Ormond Beach, the City Commission for approving it at the first reading, and for the staff that worked so hard on this," she added. * Exerpts taken from an online article in the Ormond Beach Observer dated January 21st.

| | | | Clean-Up Makes a Difference |
| Members of the Loop's CleanUp Crew recently tackled a section of the Loop around High Bridge Road and the Knox Bridge. More than 12 people volunteered their time to keep trash and pollutants away from our waterways and natural areas. Thank you to all who volunteered and especially to our Crew Coordinator, Alicia Oktar. Keep an eye out for more clean ups in our upcoming newsletters and CLICK HERE if you'd like to volunteer.

Knox Bridge (High Bridge) Repairs |
---|
As of right now, it appears that the Knox Bridge/Highbridge Road closure will begin on March 17th and end around May 1st. Repairs to the the bridge's concrete supports are a major priority and once new concrete is installed, it will take about 45 days for the concrete to "cure." As a result, Highbridge Road and the Knox Bridge will be closed during this time and motorists must take other routes. Also during this time, Walter Boardman will receive a double yellow, no passing zone designation which will hopefully help calm the traffic down in this environmentally sensitive area. | |
